Discovering the small building on the side of a fairly busy street—one that all too often goes unnoticed—which bears witness to an epidemic that profoundly affected the area’s residents and to Alessandro Manzoni’s masterpiece *The Betrothed*, which he dedicated to the devastating plague that struck Lombardy, and in particular Milan, to which he devotes no fewer than two chapters.
